How to: naturally treat a skin irritation at home

Writer's picture: Summer C.Summer C.

"Oh, no!" You screech as you notice a new spot on your fur babies skin that looks irritated and unpleasant. " What should I do?" follows right after that first alarming phrase.

If you live anywhere in the country, like us, you know how hard it is to find a vet that is actually open on the weekends or if you are in the city, we also know it is hard to even get your pet into the vet within the same week that a spot appears on their skin.

We know first hand how scary it can be when your best friend appears to have a sore or small wound that looks irritated and all you want to do is help them, but have no clue where to start.

First things first, do not panic. Your poochs spot is most likely nothing to be super concerned over. As long as you take proper care of the irritation and make sure it is healing, save those extra dollars for a new toy or treats for your baby instead of a hefty vet bill!

Disclaimer: Large wounds and irritations on the skin that are persistent or won't heal, absolutely need to be seen by the vet. We also advise to call your vet to let them know of your dog's condition and get proper medical advice.

Now, let's talk about the possible options as to what is wrong with your pup!

Most likely, small skin irritations are due to scratches from playing outside or with other dogs, hot spots, burns, bruises, bug bites, or allergies.

As a breeder, we deal with a lot of minor skin irritations and this is how we treat them naturally and have found great success!

Honey

Honey is an amazing gift from God. Not only does honey have a ton of medical benefits when ingested, by both dogs and humans, it is also AMAZING for the skin. Honey has anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, and antifungal properties. It has been proven to work wonders to promote healing to minor skin irritations.

To use honey on your dog, pour a little bit of honey into a small bowl or cup. Make sure your honey is raw, unfiltered, and if possible, organic. Clean up the wound or irritation with some warm water and a towel to make sure it is clear of debris or bacteria. Make sure to wear gloves and dip your fingers into the honey and lather it onto the sore or irritated spot.

If you have the option, place the cone of shame on your dog or puppy for at least an hour to let the honey do it's work and keep your pooch from licking it off.

We also recommend keeping a towel or blanket under pet or placing them in a crate to avoid sticky honey stains on clothing and carpeting.

Continue to do this everyday, 2-3x a day until the skin irritation is healed.

We have found honey to be a miracle worker in our house and we hope it proves the same for you!

Again, we are not a medical professionals nor claim to be. This is what we have found to work from our personal experience and by the recommendations from our vet. Make sure to do your own research and contact your veterinarian for medical advice.

Happy healing!
